Morskie Oko sits in the Polish Tatras near Zakopane, and it is the largest and deepest lake in Tatra National Park. Now the question everybody asks first - how much walking. The path from the car park to the lake is not mountaineering. It is a pleasant walk along a paved avenue by the forest, manageable without any special physical fitness, and if you would rather not walk at all, you can ride up by horse-drawn cart. Still, bring comfortable footwear and clothing for the weather: mountains are mountains, and the valley and the lakeside can feel like two different days.

Zakopane, Poland's best-known mountain resort, is the natural gateway to Morskie Oko. Traditional wooden Tatra architecture, the busy Krupowki street, the feel of a mountain town - all of it is close by. Whether the departure includes separate time in the town depends on the specific programme, so ask the manager when you book instead of filling in the blanks yourself.

The day runs like this: the coach leaves Uzhhorod in the morning, the group crosses the border together, and by evening you are home. Expect an early start and a long drive both ways - that is the price of the no-hotel format. And one more thing worth saying plainly: the border queue is unpredictable, so the return time always floats. Plan something important for that evening and you will probably regret it. A lunch stop is included in the programme.

Documents are what most often keeps people off the coach. Crossing the border requires a biometric international passport valid for at least 3 months after your return date. A child travels on their own international passport - being "written into a parent's document" has not worked for years. A domestic passport or ID card is not enough. Check the expiry date well in advance, not the day before departure.

Entrance tickets to museums and castles are paid separately, so carry a little cash for small expenses and coffee along the way.
