One-day excursions to Europe from Uzhhorod and Mukachevo

Now about time, and here it is worth being blunt. One-day trips to Europe mean a long day, not a light stroll. Nyíregyháza is the shortest at 14 hours. Košice takes 17. Budapest, Eger, Miskolc and the Christmas market run 18 hours each. Salina Turda takes 20. The departure is early, the return is late, and that figure already accounts for the border, which sometimes queues. If you have work the next morning, pick a shorter route.

In terms of content the list splits roughly in half. One half is cities and architecture: Budapest with Buda Castle, the Fisherman's Bastion and the Parliament; Gothic Košice with St Elisabeth Cathedral and Hlavná ulica; university Debrecen with the Déri Museum; medieval Levoča and Spiš Castle. The other half is water and mountains: Hajdúszoboszló with the thirteen pools of Hungarospa, the thermal pools of Eger with a wine tasting, the cave baths of Miskolc-Tapolca, the glacial Štrbské Pleso in the High Tatras, Morskie Oko, and Bachledka with its treetop walk. Bachledka is the only purely walking excursion here - everything else is bus-and-walking, so your legs do work, but not all day.

What the price covers: transport and guided support from a professional guide. What it does not cover: entrance tickets to museums and castles, which are paid separately on site. A lunch stop is built into the programme, and free time for photos and souvenirs is always allowed for - this is not the format where you are herded from one sight to the next without a pause.

Documents are where trips fall apart most often. You need a biometric international passport valid for at least three months after your return date. A domestic passport or an ID card will not get you across the border. A child travels on their own international passport, not on a parent's. Check the expiry date well in advance, not the day before departure.

Children are welcome: most routes are family-friendly. But this is a long day of 14-20 hours, so with pre-schoolers it is better to choose the shorter trips - Nyíregyháza or Košice. Dress for the weather and bring comfortable shoes - even the city programmes involve a lot of walking on cobblestones.

Why start from here. One-day excursions from Uzhhorod and Mukachevo work because both towns sit right at the border: you do not lose the first day travelling to the starting point, as happens when you set off from the centre of the country. Košice or Nyíregyháza become a realistic Saturday outing rather than a holiday.
