Spring tours

A spring tour of the Carpathians and Transcarpathia is the shortest way to see the region at the moment it comes back to life. In late March the upper slopes still hold snow, in April Uzhhorod turns pink with cherry and magnolia blossom, and at the turn of April and May the Narcissus Valley near Khust is covered with a white carpet. Pro Karpaty has been running tours since 2008 and plans its spring programmes around the peak of each of these moments, as far as the weather of a given year allows.

How spring differs from summer here

The main advantages of a spring trip are water and quiet. Meltwater fills the rivers, so April is usually when the waterfalls peak: Shypit on Borzhava, Voievodyn in the Uzh valley and Probiy in Yaremche roar as they never do at any other time. Meanwhile Palanok and Nevytske castles stand without summer queues, mountain taverns have free tables, and accommodation is usually still cheaper than in summer. For photographers spring in Transcarpathia is the most rewarding season: the young green of the beech forests has a translucent quality that turns dark by summer.

A calendar of spring: what to travel for and when

Late March to early April. The first warm days in the valleys, snowdrops and squills, and the open-air thermal pools of Kosyno, Berehove and Velyatyno. Snow still lies in the mountains, so this is the time to combine hot water with walking in the foothills.

Mid-April to early May. Cherry and magnolia blossom in Uzhhorod: the city turns pink right above the lanes of the old centre, and the cherry-blossom alley becomes the single most photographed spot in Transcarpathia. The exact week depends on the weather, so we plan blossom tours in advance and confirm the date against the forecast.

Late April to mid-May. The Narcissus Valley near Khust is one of the few surviving lowland stands of wild narrowleaf daffodil in Europe. The high meadows open at the same time, and in most years the paths up Borzhava and Pikui are already dry enough for ordinary trekking.

The May holidays. The warmest and most sought-after stretch of spring: everything is running, from rafting on the Tysa to young-wine tastings. These dates are the first to sell out.

The dates in this calendar are indicative: the peak of the blossom shifts by a week or two depending on how the winter and spring of a given year run. We check them against the forecast before departure, and if the blossom is already over or a mountain path is closed by the weather, we swap the location for an equivalent one and tell you in advance rather than on the road.

What a spring tour includes

Every programme covers transfer along the route in a comfortable vehicle, a guide who knows where the blossom is thickest and which paths are already passable, and the tour programme itself. Accommodation and meals depend on the specific route: a one-day trip does not include them, a weekend tour usually does. The exact contents are always listed on each tour page. A prepayment secures your place and the price; the manager tells you the amount before you pay.

Who a spring trip suits

Families with children, because spring walking sections are short while the impressions are many; children under 14 travel only when accompanied by an adult. Groups of friends and couples, because the sites are far less crowded. School groups, for which we run separate programmes with the appropriate logistics and paperwork. And anyone who has already seen the Carpathians in summer, because spring reveals the region almost from scratch.
