The programme covers Maramureș, the Merry Cemetery, the Peri Monastery and the city of Baia Mare. Maramureș is an authentic region of wooden churches and traditional rural life in the Carpathian foothills, and the Merry Cemetery, with its carved and painted crosses, is the main reason to bring a camera.

About timing. An early start is unavoidable - 16 and 20-hour days do not fit into a calendar day any other way. The group crosses the border together and the guide handles documents and insurance, but nobody can promise how long the queue at the checkpoint will be. Keep the following day free, especially after Salina Turda.

Where you set off from. The coach starts in Uzhhorod, and for Romanian routes a pick-up in Mukachevo is possible - it is stated in the page title itself and it suits everyone living closer to the centre of the region. Say where you are boarding when you book: the manager will hold your seat and pick-up point and confirm the time separately.

When to go. Summer is the best season for the salt lakes, and it is the high season for this direction. Salina Turda and Maramureș work all year round, and outside July and August they are noticeably quieter. That is precisely why summer dates go faster: seats on the coach are limited, so book early.

What to bring. Comfortable shoes and clothing for the weather - it is cool underground in Salina Turda no matter what the thermometer says on the surface. For Solotvyno bring a swimsuit, a towel and a separate bag for your things, because salt gets on everything. Most excursions are family-friendly, but this is a full-day trip - with pre-schoolers, consider whether your child will cope with that much time on the road, and the programme always leaves free time for photos and souvenirs.

If you are torn between the three, the rule of thumb is simple. Want a wellness day on the water - Solotvyno. Want the strongest impression and do not mind a long drive - Salina Turda with Cluj-Napoca. Want ethnography, wooden churches and the lowest price - Maramureș with the Merry Cemetery.
