Excursions in the Carpathians

Excursions in the Carpathians from Uzhhorod come to ten routes in a single schedule, priced from 300 to 1 900 ₴ per person, and every one of them is a day trip: out in the morning, back in the evening. What separates them is not the scenery - the scenery is good everywhere here - but how many hours on the road and how many kilometres on foot you are willing to sign up for. So the most useful thing you can do before choosing is answer that question honestly, and only then look at the names. Everything on this page is a one-day excursion to the Carpathians from Uzhhorod: no overnight stays, no backpacks, no hotels in this schedule.

Roughly, the list splits in two. First, the routes where your legs do the work. The hike to the Voievodyn Waterfall: 1 000 ₴, 10 hours, eight kilometres up a mountain valley. The hike to the Blue Lagoon: also 1 000 ₴ and also 10 hours, but fifteen kilometres along the Liutianka, with turquoise water and a seventeenth-century church at the end. The Dovbush Rocks and Tustan Fortress: 1 900 ₴, 14 hours - the longest and priciest day here, with stone giants, a cliffside fortress and a rock monastery. Synevyr and the gems of Mizhhiria: 1 200 ₴, also 14 hours; the lake itself sits at 989 metres and is the largest mountain lake in Ukraine. These need proper footwear, clothing for the weather and some habit of walking.

Second, the routes where you mostly look and listen, and your legs stay in strolling mode. Schönborn Park with craft cheeses: 800 ₴, 8 hours, a dairy, trout and the horses of Voievodyno. Vynohradiv, the royal town: 1 100 ₴, 10 hours, the Perényi Palace, a buffalo farm making mozzarella and wine cellars. Secrets of the Uzh Valley: 1 000 ₴, 10 hours - wooden churches on the UNESCO list, the fortifications of the Árpád Line, the culture of the Boykos and Lemkos, and the Uzhok Pass. Kolochava: 1 200 ₴, 14 hours, an open-air village museum with a narrow-gauge railway and a bird park. And the shortest option of all - Uzhhorod, an ancient town on foot, 300 ₴ for 2 hours, without leaving the city. The Carpathians with a photographer sits apart and is quoted on request, since it depends on the shoot; the shooting happens at Synevyr, Shypit and the Borzhava highlands.

The difference between those two halves is not cosmetic. Ten hours at Voievodyn means most of a day on the trail with a pack and water; ten hours at Vynohradiv means transfers, a palace, a farm and a tasting where the hardest decision is which cheese to buy. People sometimes book "something in the Carpathians" at random and are then surprised that one group came home tired and another did not. That is why the duration is printed on every card - here it tells you more than the price does.

Every route price covers the transfer and a professional guide. Museum and castle tickets are paid separately, and so is lunch, though the programme always stops for it; the two-hour city walk has no lunch break by definition. Free time for photographs and souvenirs is built into each programme, and the 10- and 14-hour routes have more pauses than the eight-hour ones. As for papers, a passport or any other identity document is enough.

Why start here. Uzhhorod is the nearest large town to the western Carpathians, and all ten routes leave from it, so none of your days is spent merely reaching the starting line. That is the part no route description shows, and the part that decides whether the day works. For the same reason, ask the manager about the actual state of the trail and the weather on your date rather than trusting the forecast on your phone: the mountains keep their own schedule, and it can be warm in town while the pass is already cold.

First time in the region and unsure where to begin? Take something in the 8-10 hour range: a full day, but not a punishing one, and you are back before dark. Coming back a second time and wanting your legs used rather than your window? Voievodyn, the Blue Lagoon or the Dovbush Rocks. A group with children or older parents is safer starting with the two-hour Uzhhorod walk - see how everyone holds up, then take the mountains; the fourteen-hour Synevyr, Kolochava and Dovbush days are better kept for children who have hiked before.
