The European direction means the longest days. Two things to know in advance: departures are early and returns are late, and you need an international passport, while some programmes specify a biometric passport or a Schengen visa in an ordinary one. Departures to Slovakia and Poland run from Uzhhorod only. For Austria, joining in Mukachevo can be arranged - mention it when you book.

As for the town itself, Palanok Castle is an 11th-century fortress on a volcanic hill with the whole Latorica valley in view; it is part of the Castles of Zakarpattia and Mukachevo route, together with Serednie Castle and Saint Miklos. The historic centre - the town hall, St Martin's Cathedral, the cafés and the miniature sculptures - is easy to walk on your own between departures, and fifteen minutes away stands the Schonborn Palace in Chynadiiovo: 365 windows, 52 rooms and 12 towers, one for every day, week and month of the year.
