Mukachevo - the legendary city of Transcarpathia

If ancient Uzhhorod is the heart of Transcarpathia, then Mukachevo - is its soul. Surrounded by majestic mountains, it is one of the most picturesque cities in Ukraine, celebrated for its unique history. Within its seemingly small area, Mukachevo has gathered an impressive array of unique monuments from the Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque eras. This is a city of eclectic styles, blends of fragrant wines in cosy little streets, an extraordinary aura and powerful energy.

The atmosphere and history of the city draw in and captivate even seasoned travellers. Historians offer no exact information about when precisely Mukachevo was founded. It is known that already between the 10th and 11th centuries the city was one of the most developed in Kyivan Rus. It was in those times that the legendary Palanok Castle appeared here, recognised today as one of the most architecturally interesting and best-preserved fortifications in Ukraine.

The centre of Mukachevo

The best way to begin getting to know Mukachevo is from its centre. Its main adornment - the town hall - was built at the start of the 20th century. This elegant building is rightly considered one of the most beautiful town halls in Europe. The city council still works here to this day, and in its inner courtyard you can see splendid contemporary sculptures.

Above the central square rises St Martin’s Cathedral, the patron saint of the city. Beside it stands the Gothic Chapel of St Joseph, adorned with medieval murals. Do not walk past the other masterpieces of Mukachevo’s sacred architecture - the Dormition Church with its elegant austerity and St Nicholas Cathedral, where the oldest written monuments have been preserved (the “Gospel” (1401), Ivan Fedorov’s “Bible” (1581) and others), as well as the relics of St Moses the Hungarian.

Another gem of Mukachevo is the Rákóczi Palace, well known as the “White House” (so named for the colour of its façade), built in the 17th-18th centuries in the Baroque and Renaissance styles. Once it was the residence of Transylvanian princes and Austrian counts, and today it is an art institute.

Palanok Castle: history and legends

The tale of Palanok Castle, which towers over the city and is its main landmark, is worth saving for dessert. The cosy little town grew up around the impregnable fortress that protected Mukachevo from enemy attacks. It is precisely with the hill on which the castle stands that the most popular version of how the city itself got its name is usually associated. According to legend, on the prince’s orders the local residents heaped up the hill with their own hands amid great torment - hence the name: Mukachevo (from “muka”, torment).

The castle rises on a 68-metre hill of volcanic origin above the valley of the River Latorytsia. Unfortunately, the exact date of the castle’s founding has not been preserved. It is known only that the fortress already existed in the 11th century. It was named “Palanok” after the oak palisade (palanok) that enclosed the moat around the castle. Throughout its history the fortress served as the residence of many princes and wealthy barons. Its keeps and towers were destroyed more than once during numerous battles, and a political prison was even set up here. But this only hardened the castle. “Palanok” was nicknamed the Castle of Freedom - it was never once taken.

Every year people come to Mukachevo for the most intoxicating and fragrant festival in the whole country - “Red Wine”, where you can taste the finest and rarest wines of Transcarpathia.
