A tour to Kosyno from Uzhhorod and Mukachevo.
Transcarpathia has long and deservedly been considered a land of winemakers, where the secrets of the craft passed from generation to generation, refining centuries-old traditions. Yet wine is not the only thing this region is famous for: among its many features, its multi-ethnic character deserves a separate mention. Hungarians hold a special place here, giving Transcarpathia its inimitable flavour. Most Transcarpathian Hungarians live in the Berehovo district, where Hungarian has the status of a regional language, which means official paperwork is kept in both Ukrainian and Hungarian. This is where you will find the wonders of Hungarian national cooking, real wine and old wine cellars hollowed out of the rock by Turkish prisoners, delicious infusions and liqueurs, remarkable stories and curious traditions. Even the time here is ‘Central European’, and the opening hours of cafés and shops carry a special note - KCh, meaning ‘Kyiv time’.
Leaving Uzhhorod, whose old Hungarian name is Ungvár, we head towards the Berehovo district. The Hungarian villages surprise you not only with their cleanliness, order and solidity: the state flags of Ukraine and Hungary hang peacefully together on the houses, all the signs are in Hungarian - advertisements and street-name plates alike - and the Shevchenko Street familiar to us is written as Shevchenkó utca.
The first stop is the village of Koson (Kaszony), where the Kosyno thermal pools lie literally a few hundred metres from the state border between Ukraine and Hungary. The thermal waters here have unique healing properties - there are only a handful of such places in the world: comparable natural riches can be found perhaps only in New Zealand, Iceland, Sakhalin and Kamchatka. The baths were designed on the experience and architectural solutions of similar thermal pools in Hungary, and the result is a high standard of comfort, aesthetics and hygiene. Besides the fun attractions, there are seven kinds of sauna and bath open to everyone: a Hungarian sauna, a hammam, a salt cave, a eucalyptus bath, a cryo-sauna and a Roman bath.
Lunch in the restaurant in the village of Dyida is a proper showcase of real Hungarian cooking: bograch, bab leves, tarhonya leves, csirke paprikas, lacipecsenye, palacsinta… After a meal in a Hungarian restaurant, many of these dishes will no longer be a blank spot in your culinary knowledge.
Berehovo is the cultural centre of Transcarpathia’s ethnic Hungarians, five kilometres from the state border. The town is proud of a history of more than 900 years and is one of the oldest in the country: it was first mentioned in 1063. Before you stands one of the oldest Gothic churches in Ukraine - the Roman Catholic Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, built in 1100. It astonishes with its rich history and unique architectural details, among them a sundial on the façade by which you can always tell the exact time - provided, of course, that the sun is shining. The Protestant Lutheran church has austere decoration and a hall that seats 1100 people, and during services an old RIEGER organ plays here. The bridge over the Verke canal, which links the Latorytsia and Borzhava rivers, was built in 1853 and is not only beautiful but the oldest bridge in the Transcarpathian region and in the whole of Europe. The county courthouse, built in 1912, is striking in its precision and harmony, while the OROSLAN and GRAND OTEL hotels, the Golden Peacock casino, the Bethlen counts’ palace and the twin houses set off the charm of this quiet European town. The Hungarians themselves call Berehovo Beregszasz.
Winemaking is inseparable from the history and culture of both the Hungarian people and the Berehovo area. Berehovo wines have always been famous for their high quality and unforgettable taste. The tasting is led by a master winemaker, and if you would like to take a piece of sunny Transcarpathia home with you, the wine you liked can be bought right there in the cellar.
“26.03.24 були на екскурсії в Термальних водах в Косіно. Наша подорож була захоплюючою і цікавою вже з перших хвилин завдяки екскурсоводу Сергію. Його розповіді були цікавими, а екскурсія була насиченою. В термальних басейнах відчула повний релакс. А пішохідна екскурсія по Берегово та обід в угорському стилі познайомила нас зі світом угорської культури. Рекомендуємо цю екскурсію. Щиро дякуємо агенції і особливо пану Сергію🥰”
