Hungarian thermal baths in a day from Zakarpattia: Hajduszoboszlo, Nyiregyhaza and Eger

The Hungarian border is a short drive from Uzhhorod, which is why the thermal baths of Hungary have become a kind of next-door holiday for Zakarpattia: no overnight stay, no annual leave, no suitcase. You leave in the morning, spend a few hours in warm water and are back home the same evening. Our schedule of one-day excursions to Hungary from Uzhhorod includes three routes where thermal water is the main story of the day, or one of them: Hajduszoboszlo, Nyiregyhaza and Eger. The baths differ in character, in the length of the day and in price, so it is worth choosing deliberately.
Hajduszoboszlo: the trip that is all about the water
the excursion to Hajduszoboszlo is a day where everything serves a single purpose - bathing. The town lies about 165 km from Uzhhorod and has long been considered the most popular thermal resort in the country. The local Hungarospa complex is the largest in Hungary: 30 hectares and 13 pools, with thermal water drawn from a depth of more than 1000 metres.
It is the composition of the water that makes Hajduszoboszlo special. It contains:
- iodine and bromine - affect the nervous system and hormonal balance;
- fluorine - strengthens bone tissue and teeth;
- magnesium and calcium - relax muscles and reduce pain;
- iron - improves blood circulation;
- salts and bituminous substances - give an anti-inflammatory and restorative effect.
The resort is traditionally recommended for people with arthritis, arthrosis, musculoskeletal conditions, rheumatism and joint or back pain. Next to the pools stands the House of Bells - an installation of small bells and trees that plays a melody every half hour, said to encode the milestones of Hungarian history.
Practical details: duration 16 hours, departures on Mondays, price from 2500 UAH. Always check the current dates and price on the excursion page itself.
Nyiregyhaza: water, a zoo and shopping in one day
the one-day excursion to Hungary and Nyiregyhaza is the shortest of the three routes, 14 hours, which is exactly why families with children choose it most often. The thermal part here is the Aquarius Spa and Wellness Centre: indoor and outdoor pools, water slides, a treasure island for children, and for adults a modern treatment base with a Finnish sauna, steam room, infrared sauna, jacuzzi, underwater jet massage, carbon dioxide bath, solarium and several kinds of massage, including reflex zone foot massage.
But Nyiregyhaza is not only about water. The city is interesting for its Secession architecture - mosaic-decorated houses in the centre - and on its outskirts sits a zoo, one of the largest in Eastern Europe: spacious enclosures, a forest park, rest areas and street cafes. Add shopping in European brand stores and Hungarian cuisine in local bistros and restaurants. The price is from 2500 UAH, with Sunday departures.
Eger: the baths as a reward for a full day
the excursion to Eger with thermal baths and famous wine is no longer a trip for the water alone but a complete day of history, wine and a finale in the pools. It is the longest of the three - 18 hours - priced from 3800 UAH, with Saturday departures.
Eger is an old spa town, and its thermal pools with medicinal water sit right in the centre; among them is a unique sixteenth-century Turkish dome. The programme sets aside a separate block for bathing at the end of the day, after the sightseeing part.
Before the water there will be Eger Castle with its museum of the defence against the Ottomans (in 1552 the fortress was held with the help of its women defenders, the legendary Ladies of Eger), a sixteenth-century minaret, Eger Basilica, the Eszterhazy Palace and the main square with the monument to Istvan Dobo. Wine is a story of its own: Eger is the birthplace of the Bull’s Blood blend (Egri Bikaver), and the Valley of the Beautiful Women holds dozens of wine cellars. The programme includes a tasting of regional wines or of palinka in a historic palinka pharmacy.
Three baths side by side: which one suits you
- If you want medicinal water and a lot of pools - Hajduszoboszlo. It offers the most water in a single day and the best known mineral composition.
- If you travel with a child or want a shorter day - Nyiregyhaza: 14 hours, slides and a treasure island at Aquarius, and a zoo next door that saves the day when a child gets tired of swimming.
- If you want impressions and not only pools - Eger: a castle, a basilica, a tasting and the thermal baths as the closing chord. It is, however, the longest and most expensive of the three days.
One difference is easy to overlook: in Hajduszoboszlo and Nyiregyhaza the water is the goal, so you spend most of the day in the baths, while in Eger bathing is only one part of the programme.
What to bring
- a swimsuit and a towel (both can be bought on site, but at a higher price);
- rubber slippers and a swimming cap;
- a bag for wet clothes;
- a small amount of cash for the locker, drinks and small purchases;
- a passport for every participant, children included.
The currency in Hungary is the forint. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but a little cash for transport, coffee or souvenirs is useful. The guide will suggest a convenient place to exchange money.
When to go
The thermal baths of Hajduszoboszlo and Eger are open all year and are at their best in the cold season: the contrast between frosty air and hot water is a pleasure in itself, and there are far fewer queues in winter. Eger is also rewarding during the wine-making season. In summer the Nyiregyhaza format works well: outdoor pools, slides and a walk through the zoo.
Practical arrangements
All three routes are group bus-and-walking excursions departing from Uzhhorod, from Koriatovycha Square; a pickup in Mukachevo is by arrangement only, as in other towns of Zakarpattia. The meeting time is communicated by the manager, so rely on that confirmation rather than on any schedule found online.
The price includes transport by comfortable coach, the services of a guide and excursion services according to the programme. Entrance tickets to the baths are paid separately, as are meals and souvenirs. Groups of seven or more receive a 10 % discount. Children under 14 travel only when accompanied by adults, and children under 12 have their own price. The current price and the list of services are always shown on the page of the specific excursion.
As for crossing the border, the rules change from time to time, so check the current requirements before your trip.
Summary
Three Hungarian baths in a day from Zakarpattia are three different scenarios, not three versions of one. Hajduszoboszlo is about water and recovery, Nyiregyhaza about a family day and the shortest drive, Eger about history, wine and pools as a finale. Compare the length, price and mood of the day and the choice becomes obvious. All the routes are gathered on the page of excursions to Hungary, and a wider selection of neighbouring countries is in the excursions to Europe section.
