SPA Excursion to Lumshory: Bathing in Cauldrons amid the Carpathians
A SPA excursion to the highland village of Lumshory is the ideal choice for anyone tired of city noise, constant bustle and information overload. Here, amid the Carpathian mountains, peace, tranquillity and a complete reset await you.
The silence and grandeur of the primeval beech forests, the soothing sound of the mountain stream, the picturesque waterfalls and the healing hydrogen-sulphide cauldrons of Lumshory give you unforgettable sensations and true restoration of body and soul.
Lumshory is one of the most famous SPA spots in Zakarpattia, where the ancient traditions of healing in nature have been preserved.
Bathing in the cauldrons helps to:
Alternating between the hot mineral water and the cold mountain river creates a powerful health-giving effect.
A huge cast-iron cauldron with a capacity of around 2000 litres sits in a roofless wooden hut. It is filled with mineral spring water and heated with firewood over an open flame.
This alternation is repeated several times - the sensations are incredible, and the effect stays with you for a long time.
Before the SPA treatments you can enjoy a walk along the Turychka mountain stream to the small but extraordinarily picturesque waterfalls «Davir» and «Solovei» (Nightingale). This place fills you with calm and lets you feel the living energy of the Carpathians.
A vivid addition to the excursion is a tasting lunch at the ethno-restaurant Pidkova (Horseshoe):
The authentic cuisine heightens the experience and adds energy after the SPA.
For lovers of history and romance there is an excursion to Nevytske Castle - one of the most mystical castles in the region.
According to legend, young brides of noble families were hidden here, which is why the castle is also called the Castle of Brides. From the castle hill there are breathtaking views of the Uzh Valley and the Slovak Tatras - perfect spots for photos.
The Local History Museum in Perechyn is a place where the history of the region comes alive. It gathers unique exhibits that tell of the daily life, traditions, crafts and cultural heritage of the Perechyn area. A visit to the museum lets you feel the atmosphere of Zakarpattia more deeply and get to know its past.
Day of the tour: Monday.
You can order a private excursion to Lumshory, Bathing in Cauldrons, at a time and date convenient for you.

The people of Transcarpathia discovered the healing properties of these mineral springs long ago: the first mention of the springs themselves and of the treatments dates from the beginning of the 17th century. Back then a barrel, or hollows cut into the rock, would be filled with mineral water and stones heated in a fire thrown in - they warmed the water, making bathing comfortable, and set off chemical processes in the mineral water itself. This water is highly mineralised and, entering through the skin and the respiratory tract, has a good therapeutic and preventive effect on the body. Bathing in the tubs has practically no contraindications and no age limits.
The whole treatment lasts no more than an hour and takes place in a fenced yard resembling a highlander’s hut. There are comfortable changing rooms, benches for resting and an easy way down to the mountain river. A fire burns continuously beneath the tub, keeping the temperature steady.
Lumshory is a small old mountain village in the Perechyn district, just 50 km from Uzhhorod, where some of the old houses could safely be called museum pieces. The forest road, winding between steep mountains, leads into a world of quiet guarded by old Carpathian beeches, and the Turychka mountain stream keeps you company all the way.
And the dishes are washed down with an exclusive palinka - the local pear moonshine made by ‘grandfather Mishko’.
The castle hill is a mysterious place: people settled here in the remote past, and some even consider it a ‘place of Power’. Historically the fortress is notable because in the 15th century members of the ancient Drugeth family of counts built a new castle on the site of the old fortifications. These works have no equal in Ukraine, as this is the only castle built on the model of Italian medieval knightly fortifications. The castle’s history ended in 1644, when the troops of the Transylvanian prince György II Rákóczi took it by storm and destroyed the fortifications. Once the fighting died away, time in the castle stood still, bringing the fortifications down to us in their original form. Here the old legend of the Wicked Maiden will come alive for you too - and make you wonder what there is more of in such ancient tales: truth or invention.
Perechyn itself is called the capital of Transcarpathian Lemko country. It is home to the only monument to a Postman in the world, raised in honour of a real person - Teodor Fekete (1789-1838), who carried out his duties conscientiously for 30 years and earned particular respect among the townspeople. From time immemorial the Rusyns had to leave home to earn a living to feed their large families, and Teodor, knowing how impatiently people waited for word from their breadwinners, set out every day in any weather with his heavy postman’s bag, walking no less than 50 kilometres.
