Tour programme
Departure from Uzhhorod at 03:30 and from Mukachevo at 04:20.
The drive across Hungary with technical stops, and by about 13:00 we are in Vienna.
A guided walk through the centre: the Ring with the Parliament, the City Hall and the Burgtheater, the Hofburg, St Stephen's Cathedral and the Opera house - from the outside, with the group leader on the Habsburgs and on how an imperial capital became a compact, walkable city.
Then free time in the centre: cafés with Viennese cakes, the Naschmarkt, the museum quarter.
Museums and palaces are optional; entrance tickets are paid separately.
The overnight stay is at a 3* hotel in Vienna or its suburbs, so you spend the evening in the city with no transfer.
Anyone not tired after the drive still has time for a walk along the lit-up Ring or for a concert - also an optional extra at your own expense.
The first day's drive is the longest of the route, so on the coach the group leader goes through the schedule for all four days with you, the meeting times and which optional extras may come up where.
Time at the border is allowed for with a margin, but it cannot be predicted exactly, so the arrival in Vienna is approximate.
Breakfast and the drive west - about three hundred kilometres of motorway along the Danube and the pre-Alpine hills, with a stop on the way.
In Salzburg there is a walking tour of the old town, listed by UNESCO in its entirety: Getreidegasse with the house where Mozart was born, the cathedral, squares with fountains, the Mirabell gardens and palace, and the Hohensalzburg fortress above the town - we see it from the outside and from viewpoints; going up inside is optional and paid separately.
The group leader shows where the town is 'Mozart's' for tourists and where it lives its own life: the salt warehouses, the market, the quarters across the Salzach.
Free time for lunch and your own routes - the town is compact, so two or three hours on foot are enough to take in the right bank with the Kapuzinerberg as well.
The overnight stay is at a 3* hotel in Salzburg or its outskirts, so the evening town without the daytime crowds is yours too: after five o'clock the coach groups leave and the old town noticeably empties.
That is one reason we do not treat Salzburg as a transit stop of a few hours.
An early breakfast and departure for the Salzkammergut lake district.
The base for the day is the village of Hallstatt itself: the lakeside promenade, the narrow main street, wooden houses on the slope, and the viewpoints from which Austria's best-known photographs are taken.
The mountain attractions - the funicular, the salt mine, the Skywalk platform - are not included in the programme and are not promised: their opening arrangements change every year, so whatever is running on the day of your visit the group leader offers as a paid optional extra.
Then we move on to St Wolfgang on Lake Wolfgangsee: the pilgrimage church with its Gothic altarpiece, the lakefront, and time for coffee and lunch at your own expense.
Both of the day's locations are about water, mountains and quiet, so the pace here is gentler than in the cities.
At the end of the day there is a long drive east with rest stops.
The night is spent in Győr: this Hungarian stop is a necessary part of the route's design, keeping the drivers' working and rest hours within the legal limits.
Breakfast and a walk through the centre of Győr - a town people usually drive straight through, although it deserves a stop of its own: a Baroque old town at the meeting of three rivers, Széchenyi Square with the Jesuit church, lanes with the characteristic corner balconies, and the riverside.
The walking part is short and unhurried, with time for coffee, breakfast in town or souvenirs; those who wish can look into the basilica or simply sit by the Rába.
Then we set off towards the border; the estimated arrival in Uzhhorod is between 17:30 and 20:00, with the group leaving the coach in Mukachevo earlier.
This ending is deliberate: you come home in daylight rather than after an overnight drive, and the next morning you are not knocked out of your working routine.
The exact time depends on queues at the border, so the schedule remains approximate, and the group leader keeps you informed throughout the day.

Frequently asked questions
Travelling abroad requires a foreign passport - biometric, or with a valid visa. A domestic passport or a driving licence is not accepted at the border. Children must have their own foreign passports. Queues at the border are possible and travel time depends on them, so the schedule is approximate.
Season: May to October, plus December. The departure date is on request: we set it around group formation, which is why specific days are not published on this page. Send an enquiry and the manager will name the nearest possible dates.
The estimated ticket budget is about UAH 4,800 (to be confirmed). Entrance fees, optional extras, lunches and dinners are not included in the tour price and are paid separately on site - this keeps the price fair for those who skip some of the sights.
