Tour programme
- Departure from Uzhhorod at 06:30 and from Mukachevo at 07:20.
- Then the border at Solotvyno: this is the shortest way out of Zakarpattia into Romanian Maramureș, and within an hour of the crossing the architecture around you has changed - steep pitched roofs, carved gates, hay stacked on wooden poles.
- The first stop is Săpânța and its Merry Cemetery: some eight hundred blue crosses, each with a carved scene from the person's life and a rhymed epitaph, often a humorous one.
- The group leader retells the best-known texts, so the inscriptions are more than decoration.
- Entry is optional and paid separately.
- After Săpânța we drive to Sighetu Marmației: a centre of Austro-Hungarian buildings, a market, cafés and time for lunch at your own expense.
- Those who wish can visit the memorial in the former prison - a separate option with its own entrance fee; the rest of the group has free time in town.
- The evening and the overnight stay are in Sighet or Baia Mare, depending on hotel availability.
- Accommodation is in twin rooms with breakfast.
- After breakfast comes the heart of the route: the wooden churches of Maramureș on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
- These are churches raised by carpenters without a single nail, with tall spired towers built to shed mountain snow.
- We call at Bârsana - a monastery complex with a well-kept garden and several wooden buildings beside it - and at Budești, where the church has kept its old wall paintings and icons on wood.
- Access inside depends on services and local arrangements, so the group leader confirms the order of stops on the spot; where entry is charged or a donation is expected, it is optional and paid separately.
- Between the villages there is time for photographs by the carved gates and a chance to buy woollen goods and homemade cheese from the owners.
- Lunch is at a village restaurant at your own expense.
- On the way back we cross the border at Solotvyno: the group reaches Mukachevo first and Uzhhorod at around 19:00, allowing for queues at the crossing.

Your place in the group is secured only after the manager confirms it. The prepayment depends on the product and we tell you the amount before we confirm your booking. After that we send you the itinerary, the departure time and the meeting point.
Cancellation by you.
Cancellation:
- more than 2 calendar days before the tour starts - we retain 10 % of the price;
- less than 2 calendar days - 50 %;
- no-show without notice - 100 %.

If we cancel the tour.
We offer another date, another route or an equivalent replacement - or we refund the amount you paid.
Participation terms.
Children under 14 travel only when accompanied by an adult. The number of places is limited by the size of the group.
Changes to the itinerary.
The organiser may make minor changes to the itinerary because of road, weather, technical or other circumstances.
Frequently asked questions
Travelling abroad requires a foreign passport - biometric, or with a valid visa. A domestic passport or a driving licence is not accepted at the border. Children must have their own foreign passports. Queues at the border are possible and travel time depends on them, so the schedule is approximate.
Season: April to October. The departure date is on request: we set it around group formation, which is why specific days are not published on this page. Send an enquiry and the manager will name the nearest possible dates.
The estimated ticket budget is about UAH 600 (to be confirmed). Entrance fees, optional extras, lunches and dinners are not included in the tour price and are paid separately on site - this keeps the price fair for those who skip some of the sights.
