Tour programme
Departure from Uzhhorod at 06:30, the road through Slovakia with technical stops.
The group reaches Kraków at around 14:00 and heads straight into the centre while it is still light.
The guided part is short and to the point: the Cloth Hall, St Mary's Basilica and Grodzka Street up to Wawel Hill.
Then the market itself, which every year fills the Main Square around the Cloth Hall: wooden stalls with ceramics, wool, carved toys and Christmas decorations, and a separate row of food - obwarzanki, grilled sausage, oscypek, hot mulled wine and smoked plums.
As dusk falls the lights come on and the main square with its town hall tower becomes the city's evening stage; in early December the Kraków szopki are displayed here too - nativity scenes built as miniature buildings out of foil and wood.
The group leader points out which rows on the square hold craft goods and which hold food, and how haggling works here when several stalls sell the same thing.
Free time at the market, check-in at a 3* hotel and the overnight stay.
After breakfast the group chooses between two options.
The first is a trip to Wieliczka, 15 kilometres from Kraków: a thirteenth-century salt mine on the UNESCO list, a route down to about 135 metres, salt chambers, underground lakes and St Kinga's Chapel, carved into the rock entirely out of salt (entrance ticket optional, paid separately, admission in timed sessions).
The second is a free morning in Kraków: the market by day without the evening crowds, when it is easier to look and to buy, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul on Grodzka, the Planty park ringing the Old Town, and cake shops with mazurek and cheesecake.
Anyone staying in the centre also has time for Wawel Hill.
The group leader talks both options through at check-in, so that nothing has to be decided in a hurry in the morning.
The group gathers in the afternoon at an agreed point by the hotel, then sets off towards the Slovak border with a coffee stop on the way.
Back in Uzhhorod at around 21:00; the transfer to Mukachevo is a separate paid option.

Frequently asked questions
Travelling abroad requires a foreign passport - biometric, or with a valid visa. A domestic passport or a driving licence is not accepted at the border. Children must have their own foreign passports. Queues at the border are possible and travel time depends on them, so the schedule is approximate.
Season: November to December. The departure date is on request: we set it around group formation, which is why specific days are not published on this page. Send an enquiry and the manager will name the nearest possible dates.
The estimated ticket budget is about UAH 2,000 (to be confirmed). Entrance fees, optional extras, lunches and dinners are not included in the tour price and are paid separately on site - this keeps the price fair for those who skip some of the sights.
