Tour programme
Departure from Uzhhorod at 05:30, with the pick-up in Mukachevo at 06:15.
Beyond the border the road opens onto the plain of the Great Hungarian Puszta, and by the middle of the day we are in Nyíregyháza, a regional capital that grew up around a salt lake.
The main stop of the day is the Sóstó park: pines planted on sand, baths of salty thermal water and walking trails laid with wooden boardwalks.
Next to it is one of the best zoos in Central Europe: white tigers, an oceanarium with an underwater tunnel and heated pavilions with a tropical climate, so cold weather does not spoil the visit (entrance tickets optional, paid separately).
Anyone skipping the zoo has time for the baths or for the town centre with its pedestrian Kossuth street.
In the evening we move on to Hajdúszoboszló and check into a 3* hotel.
Two nights in one place - the suitcase is unpacked only once.
The whole day belongs to Hungarospa, the largest thermal complex in Europe by water surface area, a few minutes' walk from the hotel.
Inside there are several different worlds: therapeutic pools of iodine-bromine water drawn from over a thousand metres down, quiet basins with underwater loungers and hydromassage, an indoor section independent of the weather, a shallow children's area and a water park with slides (entry optional, paid separately).
The thermal water of Hajdúszoboszló is prescribed as a course of treatment for joint conditions, so the local pace is unhurried - nobody hurries you out of the pool.
The group leader suggests where to start and how long to stay in the hottest water.
You can have lunch without leaving the grounds: there are cafés and restaurants inside the complex.
The evening is free - Hajdúszoboszló has a pedestrian street with cafés right by the entrance to the resort.
After breakfast we drive to Debrecen, Hungary's second city and the historical capital of Hungarian Protestantism.
In the centre we see the Great Reformed Church, where the country's independence was proclaimed in 1849, the building of the Reformed College, and Piac Avenue with its late nineteenth-century facades.
Then the Great Forest north of the centre, where the Aquaticum thermal complex sits among the oaks: classic bathhouse architecture, thermal water with a high mineral content and an indoor water park alongside (entrance tickets optional, paid separately).
It is a calm way to close the route: after a few hours in the water the drive feels easier, and the Great Forest next door offers a walk among oaks and ponds if the baths are not for you.
We set off for the border after lunch; the group reaches Uzhhorod at around 19:30 and Mukachevo on the driver's schedule.
The exact time depends on the queue at the crossing.

Frequently asked questions
Travelling abroad requires a foreign passport - biometric, or with a valid visa. A domestic passport or a driving licence is not accepted at the border. Children must have their own foreign passports. Queues at the border are possible and travel time depends on them, so the schedule is approximate.
Season: October to March. The departure date is on request: we set it around group formation, which is why specific days are not published on this page. Send an enquiry and the manager will name the nearest possible dates.
The estimated ticket budget is about UAH 2,500 (to be confirmed). Entrance fees, optional extras, lunches and dinners are not included in the tour price and are paid separately on site - this keeps the price fair for those who skip some of the sights.
