Tour programme
Departure from Uzhhorod at 06:30 and from Mukachevo at 07:20.
The border, then the road across northern Romania towards Turda.
Salina Turda is a salt mine opened to visitors inside a vast worked-out chamber: underground there is a Ferris wheel, an amphitheatre and boats on a salt lake, while the ceiling has been left exactly as the miners abandoned it.
The descent is long and the temperature stays at about +12 °C, so a warm jumper is needed even in July.
The entrance ticket is optional and paid separately.
After the mine we move on to Cluj-Napoca and check into the hotel for two nights - nothing needs repacking after this.
In the evening the group leader guides a walk through the centre: Unirii Square with the Gothic St Michael's Church, the equestrian monument to Matthias Corvinus, and the streets of the university quarter, which stay open late.
Dinner is in town at your own expense; you return to the hotel on foot or by transfer.
After breakfast we set off for Alba Iulia, about two hours away.
The town is known for the Alba Carolina fortress: an enormous early eighteenth-century citadel built to Vauban's system in the shape of a seven-pointed star, with rows of bastions, several ceremonial gates and a fully pedestrian inner town.
Inside are the Orthodox coronation cathedral and the Catholic cathedral, the buildings of the former residence, and viewing terraces along the ramparts.
The walk takes a few unhurried hours; some museums and cathedral areas have their own tickets - optional and paid separately.
Lunch is at the citadel's restaurants at your own expense.
For Romania this is a symbolic town: the union of the country was proclaimed here, and the group leader explains why here rather than in Bucharest.
We return to Cluj towards evening.
After that the time is yours: the botanical garden for some, coffee in the centre for others.
The last morning is given to Cluj itself - a city people usually pass through in transit.
After breakfast we check out and head into the centre: the market square, the museum quarter, shops with Transylvanian ceramics and wine, and the market for things to take home.
If the group wishes, the leader adds one optional stop - the Cetățuia viewpoint above the city's rooftops, or the botanical garden, one of the largest in Europe; where an entrance ticket applies, it is paid separately.
Around midday we set off for the border.
The way back follows the same route across northern Romania, with a lunch stop at your own expense and short technical breaks.
The border crossing is the least predictable part of the day, so the arrival time is approximate: the group reaches Mukachevo first and Uzhhorod at about 19:30.
The group leader handles the formalities at the crossing.

Frequently asked questions
Travelling abroad requires a foreign passport - biometric, or with a valid visa. A domestic passport or a driving licence is not accepted at the border. Children must have their own foreign passports. Queues at the border are possible and travel time depends on them, so the schedule is approximate.
Season: all year round. The departure date is on request: we set it around group formation, which is why specific days are not published on this page. Send an enquiry and the manager will name the nearest possible dates.
The estimated ticket budget is about UAH 1,500 (to be confirmed). Entrance fees, optional extras, lunches and dinners are not included in the tour price and are paid separately on site - this keeps the price fair for those who skip some of the sights.
