Tour programme
Departure from Uzhhorod at 05:30, pick-up in Mukachevo at 06:20 - the route begins across the Transcarpathian lowland, where orchards and the old vineyards of the Berehove area run along the road.
Beyond the border the road opens into the Tokaj region: hills, volcanic soil and vineyards inscribed on the UNESCO list as a single cultural landscape.
We reach Tokaj at about 10:30.
First the town itself: low houses with wooden porches, the embankment of the Bodrog, the main street lined with wine shops.
Then we visit a family winery with a cellar cut into volcanic tuff, where the noble mould lives on the walls - without it Tokaji Aszú never gains its character (tasting optional, paid separately).
The owner explains the difference between the furmint and hárslevelű grapes in plain words - no sommelier vocabulary.
At around 17:15 we arrive in Miskolc and check in to a 3* hotel.
We unpack once - two nights here.
The morning goes to Lillafüred - the spa quarter on the slopes of the Bükk, a few kilometres out of town.
Terraced gardens were laid out here above the artificial Lake Hámori, the Szinva waterfall, the highest in Hungary, steps down from them, and above it all stands a palace-style hotel that gives the whole valley the look of an early twentieth-century resort.
Next comes St Stephen's Cave with its dripstone formations and steady cool air, or a ride on the narrow-gauge railway through the forest: both sites run on a seasonal timetable, so the group leader agrees the choice on the spot (entrance tickets optional, paid separately).
After lunch we return to Miskolc: Heroes' Square, Széchenyi Street, the Orthodox synagogue and the theatre - the town has rarely featured in tourist itineraries, so the centre here is alive rather than a shop window.
The evening is free; there are several places with local cuisine within walking distance of the hotel.
After breakfast we head north-east to Sárospatak - a small town on the Bodrog that Hungarians call the Athens on the Bodrog for its Calvinist college, where generations of the Hungarian elite were educated.
The highlight of the day is Rákóczi Castle: the Renaissance seat of the family that led the war of independence against the Habsburgs.
The arcaded inner courtyard survives, along with the Perényi loggia with its carved stone surround and halls hung with family portraits; we check the opening hours before departure, the entrance ticket is optional and paid separately.
Then there is time to walk the old quarter: the terrace above the river, the old student buildings, shops selling local wine - Sárospatak stands on the edge of that same Tokaj region.
After lunch the group sets off towards the border.
The way back runs through the same Transcarpathian lowland, and we are in Uzhhorod roughly between 17:30 and 20:00 - the exact time depends on the queue at the crossing.
Mukachevo - according to the driver's schedule.

Frequently asked questions
A trip abroad requires an international passport - biometric or with a valid visa. A domestic passport or a driving licence will not do for crossing the border. Children need their own international passport. Queues at the border are possible - travel time depends on them, so the schedule is approximate.
Season: April to October. The departure date is on request: we arrange it around group numbers, which is why specific days are not published on this page. Leave an enquiry and a manager will name the nearest possible dates.
The approximate ticket budget is around 1,800 UAH (to be confirmed). Entrance tickets, optional extras, lunches and dinners are not included in the tour price and are paid separately on the spot - this keeps the price fair for those who skip some of the sites.
