The High Tatras in a day: Strbske Pleso and Bachledka

Daily excursion schedule: Transcarpathia and Europe

The High Tatras look like a destination that requires at least a weekend with an overnight stay. In practice they are one day’s drive from Uzhhorod and back, and the schedule of one-day excursions to Slovakia from Uzhhorod contains two routes that show the Tatras from two different angles: Strbske Pleso, the pearl of the High Tatras means water, forest and the silence of a glacial lake, while Tour to Slovakia: amazing Bachledka and the Tatras means height, panorama and activities for the whole family. Here is how they differ and what is worth knowing before you book.

What Strbske Pleso is

Strbske Pleso is a glacial lake in the very heart of the High Tatras and, at the same time, the name of the resort village around it. The water is crystal clear, the shores are surrounded by dense coniferous forest, and above them stand the Tatra peaks. This is one of the best known landmarks of Slovakia and probably the most accessible point of the High Tatras: the lake is easy to reach, there are cafes and resort infrastructure around it, and a walking path circles the water.

The one-day trip lasts 16 hours, departures are on Saturdays (the second and fourth Saturday of the month), and the price starts from 3900 UAH. The programme leaves plenty of free time: some people walk around the lake and take photographs, some sit in a cafe with a view of the water, and some go further along the mountain trails that begin right there.

What the treetop walk at Bachledka is

Bachledka (Bachledka Ski & Sun) is a resort in the Spisska Magura range, only 30 km from Poprad, facing the Belianske Tatras. Its main attraction is the treetop walk: a wooden pedestrian route more than 1200 metres long, built at a height of up to 24 metres above the ground. You walk not beneath the forest but inside it, at branch level.

The route ends at a 32-metre observation tower with panoramas over the Tatras, the Pieniny and Zamagurie. The climb up the tower is a gentle spiral, so children and older visitors manage it easily. A cable car runs up to the start of the walk, so there is no need to hike uphill.

Besides the walk itself, Bachledka has a children’s area with tubing and playgrounds, easy walking trails, a cafe and a restaurant. For more active visitors there is a 1200-metre bobsleigh track, timed slalom, snowrafting and other seasonal activities, and in winter ski slopes that are part of the Tatry Super Ski system. The trip costs from 3800 UAH, with departures on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month.

Difficulty: is any fitness required

No special preparation is needed on either route. Strbske Pleso lies next to the resort village, a level walking path leads to it, and both children and older travellers cover it without trouble. The harder Tatra trails are entirely optional and only for free time: if you do not plan such a hike, the day stays a gentle walk.

The treetop walk at Bachledka is designed as a barrier-free wooden deck with railings and a gradual gain in height, and it requires no climbing skills. The real limitation here is psychological rather than physical: if you are uncomfortable with heights, keep in mind that part of the route runs above the forest and the tower adds another thirty metres.

Footwear and clothing

Weather in the High Tatras changes quickly, and it is noticeably cooler at altitude than in Zakarpattia - the most common mistake is packing for the weather in Uzhhorod.

  • Footwear - comfortable closed shoes with non-slip soles. Not sandals and not smooth sneakers: the wooden deck and mountain paths are slippery after rain.
  • Outer layer - a windbreaker and a raincoat. Rain in the Tatras arrives fast and does not last long, but it is enough to soak you.
  • In winter - a hat, gloves and warm boots; the wind is felt more strongly on the observation tower and by the open water.
  • With you - water and a snack. There are stops in the programme, but not always where and when you feel like eating.

Seasons: when to go

Strbske Pleso is beautiful all year round, but in different ways. In spring and summer the slopes around the lake are emerald green and the walk is at its most comfortable; in autumn come golden colours and the clearest air, probably the most photogenic season; in winter the resort turns into a snowy country and the frozen lake framed by conifers looks nothing like the summer postcards.

Bachledka also operates year-round, but its character changes more sharply: in summer it is the treetop walk, the bobsleigh and easy trails, in winter it is skiing and tubing. If it is the treetop walk and the view from the tower you are after, choose the warm season or a clear winter day, because in fog there is simply no panorama.

Going with children

Yes, both routes are family-friendly. The walk around Strbske Pleso is physically easy, and Bachledka is built around the idea of a family day out: a children’s zone, tubing and a cable car instead of a climb on foot.

Judge only one thing soberly - the length of the day. Strbske Pleso, together with the drive and the border, takes 16 hours, which is a lot for a small child. Bring water, a snack and something to occupy them on the road. Children under 14 travel only when accompanied by adults and with their own passport.

Arrangements and money

Both trips are group excursions departing from Uzhhorod, from Koriatovycha Square; a pickup in Mukachevo and other towns of Zakarpattia is by arrangement only. The meeting time is communicated by the manager.

A guide accompanies the group and the guiding service is already included in the price. Entrance tickets, lifts and cable cars, meals and souvenirs are paid separately - the exact list is always in the Information block on the page of each excursion, together with the current price. Groups of seven or more receive a 10 % discount.

Slovakia uses the euro. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, on the cable cars and in cafes, but a few euros in cash are useful for entrance tickets, a parking meter or coffee on the road; it is better to prepare the currency at home in advance. Check the current border-crossing rules before your trip.

Summary

Strbske Pleso and Bachledka are two ways to see the High Tatras in a single day, and they complement rather than compete with each other. The lake offers calm, water and the classic Tatra view; Bachledka offers height, panorama and activities that hold children’s attention. The ideal scenario is to visit both in different seasons. Both routes and other trips around the country are gathered on the page of excursions to Slovakia, and if you want to compare destinations, look into the excursions to Europe section.
