The legend of Lake Synevyr
The legend of Lake Synevyr tells that several hundred years ago a wealthy prince lived in the mountainous region, and all the local people worked for him. The prince’s wife died young, leaving an only daughter. Her eyes were so blue that the girl was given the name Syn (Blue). The princess grew into a true beauty, and the prince was very proud of her. One day he decided to go to the forest to see how his subjects worked, and took Syn along for the journey. While the prince talked with the woodcutters, the princess decided to take a stroll and, gathering flowers, wandered into a forest glade. Listening closely, she caught the sounds of a beautiful melody being played by a young shepherd named Vyr. Coming closer, Syn was enchanted by his tender playing, and Vyr - by her beauty and her eyes as blue as the spring sky. From that time the young people became inseparable and could not imagine life without one another.
Suddenly this became known to the stern prince. Indescribably outraged by his daughter’s unequal choice, he ordered Vyr to be killed. His loyal servants waited until the young man was left alone and dropped a huge stone onto his head. Learning of this, Syn ran to the place where her beloved had died and wept long and inconsolably. From her tears a great lake formed, its water tinged with blue, resembling the colour of the poor princess’s eyes. In the centre of the lake rose a small island, like the top of the stone that had fallen on Vyr.
Lake Synevyr, a true pearl of Transcarpathia
Lake Synevyr, as people began to call it, became a true pearl of these parts and to this day serves as a reminder of a love as deep and pure as its waters. In memory of the lovers Syn and Vyr, their sculptures, carved by a master out of redwood, rise on the lake shore. By tradition, newlyweds often come to them to ask for a long and mutual love.
Every year a multitude of people come to admire the beauty of Synevyr. Surrounded by the greenery of mountain trees, it mesmerises and beckons, as though possessed of some unknown magical power. Having been here, you will surely feel its special aura, be captivated by the blueness of the water and be immersed in an unusual atmosphere with notes of gentle melancholy.
