Landmarks of Uzhhorod: what you simply must see!

Daily excursion schedule: Transcarpathia and Europe

Пам'ятки Ужгорода When you start listing all the landmarks of Uzhhorod, at some point you may realise that you could do this almost endlessly, or, at the very least, for as long as its history is long and ancient.
Uzhhorod - is a special city, where truly everything is special, and you feel it the moment you arrive; anyone who has had the chance to visit will confirm that this is no exaggeration at all!

Historic buildings and landmarks of Uzhhorod

Uzhhorod - is one of the oldest cities in Ukraine; countless books and scholarly works have been written about how power over it passed from one empire to another, from one state to another, from one set of princes to the next. And there are even more legends and tales. All these historical, so to speak, «layers» have left their enormous imprint, first and foremost, on the architecture of the city. Which astonishes with its grandeur and, at the same time, the refinement of its forms.

In Uzhhorod literally every street, every building «breathes» history and the past, carrying within it the baggage of that era, its own riddles and mysteries. The landmarks of Uzhhorod are many streets paved with beautiful cobblestones that have survived from the days of Czechoslovak and Austro-Hungarian rule in Transcarpathia.

On top of all this, the architecture of Uzhhorod pleasantly surprises with the harmonious blend and variety of its architectural styles. Here you can encounter Gothic, Baroque, Constructivism and Renaissance, but most importantly - beauty and true masterpieces of the art of architecture! All of this makes up the single architectural image of the city, worthy not only of attention but of heartfelt admiration!

Just consider the central street of so-called «old Uzhhorod» - Korzo Street, which in translation literally means a «place for a stroll», living up to that meaning entirely. Even today this pedestrian Uzhhorod street is considered the most popular. Locals love to stroll here, constantly running into their acquaintances at almost every step.

Undoubtedly, special attention is deserved by the Hasidic synagogue, which has preserved its grandeur and originality to this day, and now hosts regular concerts by ensembles of the regional philharmonic.

You should definitely set aside time for a walk through the Czech Quarter in Uzhhorod, which is regarded as a benchmark of Constructivism, since it was precisely in this architectural style that this part of the city was built at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Cosy cafés and charming mini-sculptures
Пам'ятки Ужгорода

Besides its epochal architecture and distinctive history, Uzhhorod is known for the coffee-drinking culture that has taken shape here, the so-called «kavuvannia». Everyone knows that Transcarpathians are simply delighted by this fragrant black drink. Without it the working day does not even begin and conversation does not flow. If there is one thing that stands out, coffee in Transcarpathia really is made so deliciously that it can safely be counted among the landmarks of Uzhhorod.

And delicious coffee should only be drunk in a beautiful place. In Uzhhorod, especially in the centre, there is such a great number of varied cafés. Each of which differs from the others in some way, and not only in its interior design but also in its methods of preparing coffee. In short, if you want to enjoy truly delicious coffee drinks, you need to come to Uzhhorod.

Another distinctive feature of the city and a true source of pride for its residents is its collection of mini-sculptures. There are already several dozen of them in Uzhhorod, in various spots but mainly along the embankments. These charming little monuments to notable people connected with Transcarpathia, or to whole ideas, make you fall in love with them at the very first glance, and your hands simply reach out to touch them! It is not for nothing that we have a whole tour of Uzhhorod, devoted to these little inhabitants of Uzhhorod’s streets, because to come to Uzhhorod and not get to know them is simply an unforgivable sin!

As already mentioned in the very first paragraph, one could talk about and describe wonderful Uzhhorod and its landmarks for a very long time, but, as they say, it is better to see once than to hear a hundred times. So it is better to come and see for yourself. At your service are our guides - the best in their field, people who are truly in love with this city. We look forward to seeing you!

We will also be glad to see you on our other tours of Transcarpathia, which run on a regular basis. Very interesting is the evening tour the Uzhhorod Auto Express through the landmarks of Uzhhorod - join us!
