The Blue Lagoon in Transcarpathia

Daily excursion schedule: Transcarpathia and Europe

The picturesque and colourful Carpathian lands never cease to amaze with their unique natural wonders. The so-called Blue Lagoon in Transcarpathia , tucked away on the mountain river Lyutyanka a few kilometres from the village of Chornoholova in the Velykyi Bereznyi district, is a relatively new, untouched, breathtaking and incredibly beautiful tourist attraction of the Carpathians.

The Blue Lagoon in Transcarpathia enchants at first glance - it is a true corner of paradise and precisely the sort of place from which, quite literally, you cannot tear your eyes away. Just imagine: crystal-clear, transparent water of a blue colour set between the cliffs, into which a small, cool mountain waterfall tumbles. The lagoon is hidden from prying eyes and casual interest, so finding it is not as easy as it might seem at first. And the moment you arrive here, time stands still - enjoy the surrounding nature and its priceless gifts: the forests, the healing air and the marvellous azure lagoon, so beautiful and so blue that it seems not to be reality at all, but some incredible fairy tale.

The Blue Lagoon in Transcarpathia: how to get there

The Blue Lagoon in Transcarpathia is an incredible scenic spot. More and more people come here to relax and swim - both local residents and tourists alike. So how did such a lagoon come to be? As already mentioned, a mountain waterfall of the Lyutyanka tumbles between two cliffs - and it is precisely this that «gives birth» to the lagoon. Once this waterfall was much larger, and it was this that carved out the deep pool beneath it.

Today the Blue Lagoon has a depth of between 2.5 and 3 metres. The clear water is full of fish, which are very fond of leaping out of the blue water to overcome the pool. Anglers, however, are unlikely to relax here - the area is protected, and fishing is forbidden. The Blue Lagoon, though, is not the only one of its kind here. Following the course of the river, you can see several more such pools (albeit a little smaller in size and perhaps not quite so blue and beautiful).

Since the Lyutyanka is a mountain river, the water in the lagoon stays cool even in the summer heat. That is precisely why you should be very careful when swimming. Because of the swift current, the lagoon does not have time to warm up well, but in summer you can have a swim, invigorate yourself and feel all the unique freshness of the mountain stream. The water becomes most turquoise in sunny weather - it is at this time that its magical, rich, deep colour is revealed in full force. Блакитна лагуна в Закарпатті

The Blue Lagoon in Transcarpathia: places of interest

Interestingly, a narrow-gauge railway once ran right through here, along the route Dubrynychi - Chornoholova - Lyuta, as evidenced by a cliff pierced straight through and separate rails still on the ground. It existed in Transcarpathia from the end of the 19th century right up until 1974. This is a vivid confirmation that Transcarpathia could once boast a well-developed network of narrow-gauge railways, which were used mainly to transport timber to sawmills and factories. Today almost none of these lines remain in Ukraine. One of the most famous tourist gems in Transcarpathia is considered to be the Irshava narrow-gauge railway .

Places of interest nearby

Not far away lie the so-called licking stones - stone boulders formed as a result of water washing away the cliffs. These polished giants can be seen literally 500 m below the point where the river Bystrytsia flows into the Lyutyanka. In addition, the neighbouring tourist attractions of the Uzhanskyi National Nature Park will astonish and enchant you - the beautiful Uzh Valley, wooden churches, the mountain resort Krasiya, the picturesque Uzhok Pass, the famous Árpád Line. You will be able to visit all these wonderful landmarks during our excursion .

The picturesque Blue Lagoon will appeal to lovers of living, wild, photogenic nature. For here you will find simply incredible landscapes, fresh air, an almost complete absence of tourist crowds and the chance to take great photographs with the scenery of a corner of paradise surrounded by the beautiful Carpathians. The hike to this heavenly lagoon takes place every Sunday.
