Berehove An excursion to Berehove - a wonderful chance to discover the so-called Hungarian side of Transcarpathia, since even now the influence of the era of Hungarian rule here is vividly evident in the region’s culture, architecture and customs.

The ancient Hungarian town of Transylvanian magnates and kings, Berehove

Berehove is a border town. Most of its population here are Hungarians, and accordingly the language heard on the small town streets is most often Hungarian too. Berehove is called the Hungarian capital of Ukraine. It is also a centre of winemaking and old wine cellars, which are still used for their intended purpose to this day.

According to historians, in the times of the Roman Empire there was a small Roman settlement here. As early as the 11th century, the power of the Hungarian feudal lord Lampert established itself here. After that, rule over the town passed from hand to hand - first to the Transylvanian prince Gábor Bethlen. He was even King of Hungary for a time and left behind a magnificent count’s court, and then - to the renowned Schönborn family.

In Berehove there are two churches built in the Gothic style, as well as several buildings representing the Baroque era. Especially popular is the Berehove bridge over the river - a unique old structure that invites romantic strolls and an imaginary journey back into the distant past.

the centre of Berehove Today, against the backdrop of Transcarpathia’s multinational character and cultural distinctiveness, Berehove stands out among other Transcarpathian towns thanks to its refined architecture bearing the clear imprint of Hungarian traditions, its captivating history and its delicious wine.
