CUT! IT’S A WRAP! in Transcarpathia!

The Cinema of Transcarpathia - the magic of mountains, legends and the big screen
For lovers of good cinema, Transcarpathia can be a wonderful alternative for an interesting cinematic outing. In various corners of the Silver Land, over the course of a century, renowned directors shot many films with famous actors and adapted works of world classics. Some of the films shot here won prestigious awards and gained worldwide recognition overall.
The Cinema of Transcarpathia: interesting little-known facts
The sex symbols (Yefremov, Lanovoy, Tabakov) - the actors of the Oscar-winning film “War and Peace” were found drunk every night in the village of Kushtanovytsia.
A significant part of the film epic “War and Peace” (1965) was shot near Mukachevo. The drama based on the work by Leo Tolstoy was first filmed in Russia in 1915, and in the mid-1950s Hollywood also showed interest in the work. Director Sergei Bondarchuk even ruined his health during the filming process (he was in a state of clinical death), yet “War and Peace” - is his most powerful work. For domestic cinema, the film is famous, first and foremost, for winning the “Oscar” in the “Best Foreign Film” category in 1968.
“War and Peace” - is a canvas: magnificent balls intertwine with deadly battles. Everything is clearly divided: the festivities were filmed in St. Petersburg, the war - in Transcarpathia.
World-renowned actors starred in the cinema of Transcarpathia
Throughout the entire Soviet period, a great many works were made in which our region served not only as a historical backdrop but also as the place where the events of the films unfolded:
• “Three on the Highway” with Armen Dzhigarkhanyan
• “The Valley of the Blue Rocks”
• “Carpathian Gold”
The most notable events were the filming of the battle picture “Waterloo”. The “Mosfilm” studio also shot the picture “The Conspiracy of the Doomed”, which featured actors well known at the time - Pavel Kadochnikov and the singer Alexander Vertinsky.
Leontiev, drugs and criticism of Uzhhorod in cinema
The late 1980s, a period when things previously forbidden were shown on screen - drugs, for example. One of the films about this problem - the gripping thriller “The Road to Hell”, which was almost entirely shot in Uzhhorod.
Horrors at Synevyr and “Ivan the Powerful”
However, even now Transcarpathia does not cease to be interesting cinematically. Thus, in August 2011, at the lake Synevyr the filming of a mystical thriller blended with horror in 3D format, “Synevir”, began.
In 2013, the world saw and came to love the documentary film “Ivan the Powerful”, shot based on the works of the Transcarpathian writer Oleksandr Havrosh.
The famous Jean Reno in Transcarpathia
In 2019, near Synevyr, an episode was also shot for the Ukrainian-French film by director Frédéric Petitjean with the working title “The Last Step”, in which the leading role is played by the celebrated French actor Jean Reno.
