The spotted deer farm - the only one of its kind in Ukraine

They say the spotted deer were brought here by helicopter from faraway Russia. And that their antlers hold - healing power, while the deer themselves - are very cunning and choosy about their friends, yet at the same time extraordinarily friendly and gentle. Of course, not everything listed above - is true (there were in fact no helicopters). But one thing is known for certain: the spotted deer farm, located near the small Transcarpathian village of Iza, is a unique phenomenon and an unprecedented landmark not only of Transcarpathia, but of the whole country. There is nothing else like it in Ukraine.

From a pharmaceutical business to a tourist landmark

The history of the farm goes back to the 1980s, when several dozen spotted deer were brought to Ukraine from the city of Kaliningrad in a specially fitted-out van. The purpose of this was not at all the slaughter of the animals, as one might think; quite the opposite - it was for pharmaceutical purposes. The thing is that pancreatin - a medicine with very valuable properties - is extracted precisely from the antlers of spotted deer. But even this is not the main feature of the deer farm. Of course, the appeal and charm belong to the deer themselves. More than several hundred of them now live there. This has turned the farm into a fully fledged and quite successful tourist site, known far beyond the borders of Ukraine and rapidly developing.

The spotted deer farm - a highlight of the Khust region

Undoubtedly, the only one of its kind in Ukraine, the spotted deer farm - is in itself a very interesting place to visit. The emotions of meeting the deer - these unusual, graceful, distinctive, self-sufficient and at the same time very sweet animals - are beyond compare! The animals have already grown used to the presence of people and are no longer so frightened. If you behave calmly and peacefully, they will even let you stroke them and readily eat from your hand. The deer have a particular weakness for apples and rusks.
In the hot season most of the deer hide in the forest all day long and come out only towards evening, while in winter they love to roll about in the snow. And by the end of summer newborn deer appear here - so wonderful and touching.
