Košice in a day: route, price and what to see

Košice is the closest large European city to Zakarpattia, and it is where most of our travellers begin their acquaintance with Europe. Our excursions to Slovakia from Uzhhorod include four routes, but the one-day excursion to Košice remains the most popular one: ₴2,500 per person, no overnight stay and no hotel. Here is how the day works and who it suits.
Why Košice is the easiest way into Europe
The reason is distance. Slovakia’s second-largest city lies roughly a hundred kilometres from the border, so the drive does not eat up the trip. You leave Uzhhorod in the morning, walk the historic centre and sleep at home the same night. For a first trip abroad that matters: no need to take days off, look for accommodation or budget for a hotel night.
The second reason is the price. ₴2,500 is the cheapest option in the whole European line-up, on a par with the Hungarian thermal baths. For that you get the coach, a guide and a full day in a city whose medieval core has survived almost untouched.
What to see in Košice in one day
The centre of Košice is convenient for a short visit: almost everything people come for stands along a single street, Hlavná ulica. It is the longest pedestrian street in Slovakia and the city’s main living room.
The landmark is St Elizabeth’s Cathedral, the largest church in the country and the easternmost Gothic cathedral of that scale in Europe. Next to it stand St Michael’s Chapel and Urban Tower with its bell. Further along the street you will find the singing fountain with its music, the State Theatre building, and rows of cafés in between, where you can sit down for coffee without feeling that you are running late.
Košice is comfortable because the city does not force you to choose between a museum and a walk. In one day you manage both, since the distances here are walking distances, not driving ones.
How long the trip really takes
About 17 hours - that is the honest figure and it is worth knowing in advance. An early departure, a late evening return, and that time already includes the border crossing, which occasionally backs up. In other words, a “one-day excursion” here means a full day on your feet and on the road, not a light stroll after breakfast.
The practical conclusion: if you have to be at work at eight the next morning, plan the trip for a Saturday rather than a weekday. And do not schedule anything unmovable for the evening of your return - the exact time depends on the queue at the checkpoint, not on our timetable.
What is included and what you pay for separately
The price covers transport by comfortable coach and the work of the guide according to the programme. Entrance tickets to museums and the tower, meals, souvenirs and personal expenses are paid separately. Medical insurance is not included and can be arranged separately if needed.
A lunch stop is part of the programme, and free time for photos and a walk is always allowed for. This is not the format where a group is herded from one sight to the next without pauses.
Documents, currency, children
To cross the border you need a biometric international passport valid for at least three months after the return date. An internal passport or ID card will not do. A child travels on their own international passport - being written into a parent’s document has not worked for years. Check the expiry date well in advance rather than the night before: this is the most common reason a trip falls through.
Slovakia uses the euro. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but it is worth carrying a small amount of cash for minor expenses: an entrance ticket, coffee, a souvenir. Budget roughly €20-40 per person if you plan on a museum and lunch in a café.
The route is family-friendly: children of any age handle it well, because the bulk of the day is a pedestrian city centre rather than mountain trails. Bring comfortable shoes - there is a lot of cobblestone to cover.
When to go
Košice is good all year round, but the mood of the city changes. From April to October the summer terraces are open, the singing fountain runs and Hlavná is green - the classic setting for a walk. In December a Christmas market takes over the main street and the city becomes a reason to come in itself: mulled wine, lights and local food served right outside.
If you want quiet, pick a weekday out of season: fewer people in the centre and photographs without a crowd in the frame.
How it compares within Slovakia
Košice is about the city and its architecture. If mountains and water appeal more, the same country offers Štrbské Pleso, a glacial lake in the High Tatras for ₴3,900 and Bachledka with its treetop walkway for ₴3,800. There is a mixed option too - Levoča with Spiš Castle and the Belianska Cave for ₴3,700.
A simple guide: a first trip abroad with minimal mountain walking - Košice. Nature and panoramas - the Tatras.
