The mountain village of Lumshory

Daily excursion schedule: Transcarpathia and Europe

Високогірне село Лумшори The mountain village of Lumshory - a tiny highland village in the Perechyn district of Transcarpathia, surrounded by ancient dense beech and pine forests. From every corner of Ukraine and even from abroad people come here to «stew» themselves in cauldrons filled with healing mineral hydrogen-sulphide water.

The resort village lies at the foot of the picturesque Runa mountain meadow and has a long history. Locals tell that “lum” - means young branches, which were laid in rows - “shory”, so that they could dry out and then be used for agricultural work. Hence the name - Lumshory, that is «lum in shory».

The mountain village of Lumshory: incredible sights

The mountain village of Lumshory - a picturesque backwater that has become famous for its unique natural springs. It is known that already more than 400 years ago the local water was simply irreplaceable and very beneficial in treating the musculoskeletal system (muscles, ligaments, tendons and bones) and had an extraordinarily positive effect on the nervous system.

In those times the cauldrons looked like wooden barrels. They were heated by lowering red-hot stones to the bottom of the water. That, however, was not very convenient, and later, in the Czechoslovak era, two large metal tubs were cast at a factory in a neighbouring village. One of them can still be seen in Lumshory today, the other is on display in a museum in Vienna.

Today the cauldrons are made of high-quality cast iron, can «cook» up to 10-14 people and promise stunning and unforgettable impressions. The local Hutsul «devils» throw firewood under the cauldron. People get into it only after the water reaches 36.6 degrees. Then it is slowly heated to 40-45 degrees. As soon as you feel it is already hot enough - jump quickly into the ice-cold mountain river Turychky, which flows right nearby. Such a seemingly crazy procedure will only reinforce the healing effect.

This really is something hard to compare with anything else - vivid sensations and excellent well-being! The most extreme experience can be felt in winter, when the air temperature outside the cauldron is 10 °C below zero.

You can visit the mountain village of Lumshory, «stew» and relax in the unique cauldrons on our SPA excursion to Lumshory.
